About the Department of English

The English Department of Shishuram Das College is as old as the college itself which was established in the year 2010. Initially the Department offered courses at the General levels. The Honours Course was introduced in 2017. Since then, it has been one of the leading Departments of the college. Since the college is affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the department follows and implements the syllabus that the University has determined for its undergraduate colleges. All the students study English at the Compulsory level. This provides an immense scope for the teachers of English Department to interact with all the students of the college. These students also, irrespective of their subjects, get an opportunity to obtain a basic knowledge of English Literature and Language. The Department is proud to have very dynamic students who actively participate in academics and extracurricular activities of the college. Many of them have won prizes in college competitions. The Department has maintained a cordial relationship with the students and their parents and in return has continuously received their sincere love and trust. The department has consistently given complete attention to the problems that students belonging to this area have to face on a daily basis regarding studies. A steady improvement has been observed in the academic performances and University Examination results of the students of English Department. The students of the English Department frequently achieve First-Class marks in the University Examinations. We also regularly encourage the students to take part in Community Outreach programmes. Such programmes enable them to grow into responsible citizens of the future. In addition to the traditional lecture method the Department regularly arranges for film screenings and students’ seminars. Students of the Department of English also arrange several cultural programmes throughout the year. The students can access internet enabled computers that can help them in their studies and various other academic activities. They regularly access Room No. 9 (Smart Classroom) for ICT based classes that have made study more enjoyable and effective for them. The Department at present has three (Assistant Professor - 1; SACT – 2) experienced and well-qualified faculty members who are dedicated to ensure full academic support to the students. We regularly host faculty exchange programmes for the benefit of our students. We also regularly encourage our students to take part in sports and cultural activities organized by the college and other institutions. In our English Department a student-centric approach to teaching and learning is employed. We encourage and emphasize interactive classroom discussions, close reading of texts, and communication skills to inspire critical and creative thinking in the students. Our goal is to equip the students with strong foundation in English Studies and nurture in them passion and creativity for all aspects of literature.
